Tips For Buying USB Memory

Obviously these 2 points are important but there are many more points to consider when buying a USB memory stick. If we only consider the storage capacity factor and price it is possible that our purchase will not end up being satisfactory.

The things that in my opinion we have to take into account when buying a USB memory stick or flash drive are the following:

FACTOR 1: THE SPEED OF READING AND WRITING THE USB FLASH DRIVE

No doubt in my opinion this is one of the most important points when buying a USB memory stick.

If we choose a USB stick with a slow reading and writing speed we will surely find the following situations:

  1. When we go to copy a movie or photos inside our USB memory we are going to get tired of waiting because the writing speed will be slow. I imagine that many of you have encountered this problem.
  2. If we use the USB stick to run Linux distributions in LiveUSB mode it is possible that they notice excessive slowness when loading the operating system and performing certain operations. This slowness is due to a low read and write speed.
  3. Slowness in the case of using the USB stick to run portable applications such as Openoffice, Firefox, etc..

To avoid these and other problems, when buying a USB memory you should try to find out the speed of reading and writing the USB memory and read comments from users who have previously purchased the USB memory. The speed of writing and reading is usually indicated in megabytes per second (MB/s). The higher the write and read rate, the higher the performance and speed.

It should also be borne in mind that today’s USB Flash Drives have a large storage capacity and people use them to handle large amounts of information. Therefore speed is very important.

FACTOR 2: USB STANDARD VERSION

The USB standard comes in several versions. 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0. The more current the standard version, the higher the read and write speed we get.

So in the USB 2.0 version we can find read and write speeds that range between the following ranges:

Writing speed: 4 – 10 MB/s
Reading speed: 15 – 25 MB/s

Note: The speed of reading oscillates according to the USB that we buy.
In the USB 3.0 version we can find the following ranges of read and write speeds:

Writing speed: 10 – 20 MB/s
Reading speed: 40 – 50 MB/s

Note: The speed of reading oscillates according to the USB that we buy.

Therefore we will always get better performance if our USB is 3.0 instead of 2.0. In the case of buying a USB 3.0 memory we have to make sure that the USB ports where we will connect the memory support 3.0. Otherwise the performance will be lower than expected if we talk about USB sticks.

FACTOR 3: THE BRAND OF THE USB FLASH DRIVE

Obviously the brand of the USB memory stick is an important factor. In the market there are many generic and unknown brands in which the performance or durability they offer tend to be lousy.

If we choose well-known brands such as Kingston, Corsair, Trascend, Verbatim or Sandisk, we can be sure that the performance and durability we obtain as a minimum will be optimal.

FACTOR 4 PHYSICAL CONSTRUCTION OF USB

Types of USB Memory Stick Construction

There are many types of construction of USB sticks. There are retractable USB sticks, with covers, with different plastic qualities and materials, with rubberized plastic surfaces, promotional USB sticks, with customization possibilities, etc.

Faced with the different types of construction and options from my point of view we have to look for the following:

  • Ensure that the USB memory stick has a solid construction. It is important that the plastic is hard and if it comes glued better than better because our USB memory will be much more resistant to shocks.
  • Personally, I don’t like USB Flash Drives with lids. It’s easy to lose or break the cover. I prefer a design that protects the USB terminal from dust without using a cover.

FACTOR 5: STORAGE CAPACITY

Obviously the storage capacity is also a very important factor. We have to make sure that the USB stick we are going to buy covers our storage needs.

It is not always advisable to buy the USB Flash Drive that has the largest storage capacity. If we buy the USB Flash Drive with the largest storage capacity existing today we will end up paying an extra price that is not always worthwhile.

FACTOR 6: SIZE OF USB MEMORY

For some people, size can be important. If it is possible to equal specifications between 2 USB sticks it is always better to choose the USB that has smaller dimensions. There are two reasons:

  • Small and thin sticks are easier to transport.
  • Large and thick sticks can cause space problems when connected to the USB inputs of your computer. Once I wanted to plug 2 USB sticks into my notebook and simply could not due to lack of space.

FACTOR 7: SENSITIVITY OF THE DATA THAT THE USB MEMORY WILL STORE

If you need to store sensitive information, it may be interesting to purchase USB sticks with a hardware encryption system.

In this way if we lose our USB we will only have to regret for the loss of the USB memory since nobody will have access to the information that we had stored. If someone finds our USB memory and wants to access our information simply can not because just plug it into a computer will ask for a password. As you won’t know it you won’t be able to do any information.

  • Note: If you buy a USB stick that does not have hardware encryption we have alternative options. There is software, such as USB Safeguard or Bitlocker, that will allow us to encrypt USB sticks.
  • Note: There are also USB that have software and hardware utilities built into it. For example, there are USB Flash Drives with software for viewing photographs, USB Flash Drives with miniUSB ports with OTG function, etc.

FACTOR 8: THE PRICE

And finally, there is also a very important factor to consider. The purchase price. Everyone has to be clear about how much they want to invest in the purchase of their USB memory stick. Depending on the available budget we will have to evaluate what suits us best based on the 7 factors above.
