What is an Ambigram?

An Ambigram is a typographical design or art form in which words are presented in readable form which are not only read in the form they are presented but also from another point of view, direction or orientation. It is described as a calligraphic design that manages to compress two different readings into the selfsame set of curves. The artists who used to create ambigrams are usually referred as ambigramists. The ambigramists possess excellent skills and can create completely different ambigrams from the same word or words having different forms and styles.

Types of Ambigrams

Ambigrams are usually categorized into different types on the basis of optical illusions, symmetry and visual perception. These are described as under:

Rotational

In this type of ambigrams, design presents several instances of words when it is rotated through a fixed angle. Usually it is rotated on 180 degrees, but rotational ambigrams may also exist from other angles such as 90 or 45 degrees.

Mirror-image

It is a kind of ambigram design that can be read when reflected in a mirror, usually as the same word or phrase both ways. Figure-ground

Space-filling

It is another ambigram type which is somewhat similar to chain ambigrams, but tile to fill the 2-dimensional plane.

Spinonym

It is an ambigram type which was previously called as rotoglyphs or rotaglyphs. In this type of ambigram design, all the letters are made of the same glyph, possibly rotated and/or inverted.

Fractal

It is somewhat similar to space-filling ambigram or you can say that it is a version of space-filling ambigrams where the tiled word branches from itself and then shrinks in a self-similar manner, forming a fractal.

3-dimensional

3 dimensional ambigrams are designs which are generated using constructive solid geometry. These are a kind of art in which an object is presented in such a manner that it appears to be in readable form as several letters or words when viewed from different angles.

Perceptual shift or oscillation

Perceptual shift or oscillation ambigrams are designs which are created with no symmetry. The object represented in this kind of design can be read as two different words depending on how the curves of the letters are interpreted.

Natural

A natural ambigram signifies that kind of ambigram which possesses one or more of the above symmetries when written in its natural state, and requires no typographic styling.

Symbiotogram
